My son is complaining about his car. I drove it today and it has some issues.

It seems like its a shifting issue. When I pulled up to a stop sign the transmission stayed in gear trying to pull, forcing me to press harder on the brake.

On the other side he complains that it Doesn't always shift when it should and revs higher than it should before finally sifting to the next gear.

This is his daily driver and he drives like an old lady so we are not talking about racing the stock 1500cc motor.

Ideas and suggestions?

Trying to pull when you're stopped in the torque converter staying locked up

It's supposed to unlock when you hit the brake pedal

But Hondas are not famous for their auto trannys lasting much past 100k
The engines run forever but not the auto Trans

Check brak booster valve or vac for making you press harder to stop

Trans check fluid and or drain and refill 3qts all you need

These are solid transmissions if cared correctly

The 98 -01 accords suvks but civics known have good tranmissions

we recently had a brake issue and replaced both the brake booster and master brake.

btw its a 1990 4 door civic

shift solenoids. you can try cleaning the screens first

other than that they are bad about control
units going out mainly capacitors leaking
which is probably what you got going on

they are also really picky about fluid

valvoline full syn besides Honda fluid
is the only thing you should use

I am an aircraft mechanic. Give me a clue here. Should I swap out all the fluid and remove and replace the solenoids?

crack open the computer first-look for leaking capcitors and
water getting inside unit or burnt chips overheated cracked
joints

then if the fluid needs changing change it and clean
the solenoid screens

you will need to drain and refill 3x's

other than that and it being an OB1
car you should probably weigh your
options

you never mentioned the # of miles on it

Obd1

Anyone can suggest thinga online but seeing in person amd testing is how you get it proberly diagnosed

But only drain refill one time see if it helps o makes worse or same dont waste money dexIII will work just fine for this civic

Done this for many years and never had issue

But braking system might be 50% Your problem still

There is nothing fancy about this year trans and is simple to fix anf they are cheap for jdm trans
