Whole house generator

A 1,000 gallon tank holds 800. That’ll last one week running 24/7.

....

Which would have been just how long she would have needed it until they got the power back on in her area...

And I'm pretty sure she could have gotten the tank refilled within a day or two of the hurricane ending if she was depending on it. My comment above was just about how long a tank would last when it's just doing it's maintenance runs.

You are right about changes being needed to switch between natural gas and propane. From everything I've read it's a fairly big job, if the parts are even available for a particular generator. It sounds like you need to go one way or the other.

I was just pointing out that it's not uncommon for natural gas to be turned off in an area that may have already lost power.

If I were going to do it today, I would get a Tesla type wall battery system and have a multi fuel generator to recharge it when power is out for along time. Multi fuel gets some flexibility so you can find something to use in a crisis.

I think winter is easier for power out since you can use the back porch as a fridge and minimize your living space/needs inside. Treat home like a cabin and live small.

Good idea

The previous owners installed a Koehler whole house on propane tanks. It seemed like it only kicked in during middle of night, waking me up. Why does it need to run while sleeping?! I turned it off automatic and start up when I need it (except when I leave town) If it is a short outage, I may not turn it on at all. Getting a good ups for light appliances/chargers will carry you for awhile.
You should be able to set the exercise time. I have a Generac and you hold a button down and whatever time you do it becomes the time it runs. It runs once a week.

It’s not the exercise function, we have power outages in the night mostly. So it is running, making noise and unnecessary electricity

Got a pain-in-the-ass gasoline Generac. Works great but I'm getting too old/lazy to eff with it.
Need to get a natural gas one wired in before next hurricane season.
I’m with ya…I’m looking at going whole house also. I can get my electrician to hook up. Will just need to get the genne and gear. Natural gas so I could keep the 8500 Northern for backup backup. Ain’t such a big deal here cause cooking and heating water is gas and gas logs in the fireplace. I gotta little Honda 2000 that’ll run the fridge forever on a tank. Just don’t like having to pull the heavy bastard out and get it hooked up. Lazy….
Power went out Friday afternoon late for about 30 mins. I was debating getting the big guy out but didn’t .
