Why can't we build houses more efficiently?

It is a great idea in theory and it has been tried many times but it never seems to work out. The biggest challenge is trying to convert the construction labor force from what they've always done to assembling completed parts and pieces. It's the same reason we don't use light steel in residential construction even though it would make perfect sense - can't get the framing industry to put down a skill saw and pick up tin snips...

The most exciting thing to happen in residential construction in a long time is 3D printing and I really hope to see that take off!

An entire neighborhood of ruffle 100-150 homes down the street are all being framed 100% in light steel. It’s the first time I have ever seen it on a residential job site in 46 years.

Wow, where? I guess lumber price is finally got high enough for someone to make it work!

An opinion based question.

construction, electrical, plumbing- the trades are largely independent types of folks when it comes to contractual labor. To further define my comment , yes there are carpenters, metal craftsman , electricians etc who awork for corporations large and small and work x hours for y pay.

is a part of the issue the historical nature of labor relative to the trade?

ie how we are conditioned?
