Why didn't the Ruger SR556 ever really "catch on?"

Have you ever held one? They feel like they weigh 15lbs!

No I haven't...if it has a piston on it, I'm generally not interested unless it has a .30 hole in the barrel...but I know there's a bunch of piston guys out there. Lack of standardized parts hurt it, I guess.

A close friend of mine has owned one for about 4 years, It's a very well built and accurate rifle. The piston does help keep the chamber cleaner than a direct gas AR. But like Riddle said it's heavy for a carbine when compared to other options.

I owned one for years. I love the cleaner, cooler chamber. You still have to clean the piston and housing. It was a complete pain. It came with a bunch of bells and whistles.... BUT like everyone said it was heavy. Very front heavy.

Ccw bought one for his boy and he said it was just too heavy. Also, proprietary designs dont belong on ar's. It'd be like making a di ak that only 1 company made parts for. Til there's a standard on piston, I won't own one.

I was interested in them early on but first feedback was bolt carrier tilt or something like that.

Then I found the ODT...

I did end up with one piston AR, but in 5.45x39. Adam Arms. It works great and isn't particularly heavy.
