Why didn't the Ruger SR556 ever really "catch on?"

I could care less about the clean chamber, I don't fire corrosive and I've never had an AR fail on me even after some lengthy and dirty sessions.
So why pay the extra money? It really doesn't serve a benefit other than cleanliness.

Its simple, it doesnt do anything different or better than every other AR out there. Just another OEM with yet another AR, yawn....
Plus it was/is kinda spensive and heavy and proprietary, all bad things in an AR build.

Carrier tilt, it's ugly, it's made by Ruger, it's a piston gun, lack of replacement parts, early issues with poorly cut chambers and stuck cases, it's a fat pig of a gun, some models had an integrated / non removable flash hider? Oh, Did I mention that it's a heavy pig? 
2 words: carrier tilt. While carrier tilt is possible on DI guns (and RARELY happens), piston bolt carriers are prone to tear up buffers and tubes are never fun. To my knowledge, only LWRC has a piston system that lowers the chance of carrier tilt to DI levels.
Furthermore, they are HEAVY, almost as my as 20" SS bull barrel AR, non standard parts, and almost as much as a LWRC.

It was late to the party, and doesn't have the pedigree that some other similarly priced and configured rifles do.
Sig Rifle vs. Ruger rifle. I'm taking the Sig every time.
The Remington SAUM's beat out Winchester's WSM's on paper, but the came out too late.

Because of the piston?
I owned a SR556 too. It was $$$. Plus it was really heavy, not that I ever carried it anywhere. But I traded it for a 1983 Colt AR. The colt feels half the weight. Not that I ever carry that anywhere either.
Plus I lift weights 6 days a week so it wouldn't be too noticeable to carry the SR556. But it was still heavy. For an AR. I don't know why it didn't catch on either. It's a very cool gun, but I only own one AR. I would recommend it. If you are rich (NOT MOI)

Bench shooting is best. They are heavy but great shooter's on the bench.
