Why didn't the Ruger SR556 ever really "catch on?"

For a little more money you can own a top tier piston ar like lwrc, pof, or pws, all of which are superior rifles imo. If the sr556 was priced a llttle less I could see the appeal.

Like some have said, it's in the no mans land of AR pricing.

For the money, I'd rather have a top tier DI gun.

For a bit more (or the same price), I'd rather have a different brand of piston rifle - possibly a non-AR designed from the ground-up with a piston action. Like a sig 550 series, arsenal ak in 556, tavor, or steyr aug. Just my opinion, I'm sure the ruger is a nice rifle.

I've heard this multiple times....more so than other piston rifles?

Yes. The barrel was a fairly heavy contour and the rail design was extremely overweight. They later introduced a lighter weight model due to the number of complaints about weight. The lightweight was an improvement, but still heavy when compared to a DI gun.
