Why is China constructing large, well-designed “ghost cities”

Probably just spending all the money they are making while their economy is huge. Preparing for future generations a great place to live in nice cities just in case the USA ever gets wise and shuts off their supply.

Then why in such remote areas?

Seriously! The Chinese never do anything just for the hell of it. They are long term planers, as in generational thinking. It sounds to me like they are doing this in anticipation of war or what they think the long term effects of global warming will be. If not either of those, some other massive upheaval of civilization.

That makes no sense though. If war broke out with China, the first thing that you could do is take away all those nice Cities with a few well placed missiles then all that money and hard work is down the tubes.

Maybe they are just developing the remote areas so that in the future they won't be so remote. Someone had to be the first one to say hey this spot right here in the middle of Colorado looks like a good place to build a nice city.

But if they're empty, why would we waste ordinance on them?

Nothing so dramatic. Partially it's "busy work" to spend the billions they have from investors and corporate/sovereign coffers (that came principally from the US and Europe) that has some lasting, practical use. Especially the building in Africa, the Chinese are investing heavily on speculation that Africa is the next great frontier of capitalism, and are getting in on the ground floor when prices are cheap.

There's one in the middle of the desert. Nothing anywhere near it and inhospitable. Not a nice place to build.

See post 27. It makes no sense. You don't build in this type of area unless there is a good reason to believe people will need it. It's an entire city in the middle of an uninhabited desert. Now what would make hundreds of thousands of people move there?

A totalitarian communist state?
or
Perhaps there are resources in that region that we don't know about?
or
Perhaps a senior party official's family is in the construction business and/or controls the area the and wanted their share of the kickbacks.
