Why is China constructing large, well-designed “ghost cities”

Maybe they are just developing the remote areas so that in the future they won't be so remote. Someone had to be the first one to say hey this spot right here in the middle of Colorado looks like a good place to build a nice city.

This^^^^^ I was thinking "colonies" for the ones outside China itself.

Guys, they've built over 20 cities like this in the last few years. If they are all on a par with the one in Africa, that's 70 BILLION dollars of what appears to be useless construction. Whatever it's for, it's NOT useless.

See post 27. It makes no sense. You don't build in this type of area unless there is a good reason to believe people will need it. It's an entire city in the middle of an uninhabited desert. Now what would make hundreds of thousands of people move there?

They said the same thing about Las Vegas too.

It seems bizarre to build to this degree, on this scale with seemingly no purpose. It would make a horrible "investment" idea, as vacant buildings that are not conditioned and maintained begin to deteriorate even more rapidly. Withing 5-10 years these buildings will not even be habitable for mold, rot, leaks, insect and rodent infestation, etc.

Much of the reason for the construction is simply creating work - "shovel ready projects" - for a growing workforce. Its kind of like the "bridge to nowhere" type of projects in our country, except they actually built the "nowhere".

There's just something really strange about this and there's no logical explanation. They're either very very stupid (doubtful) or there is something going on we don't know about. Remember folks, I'm the one that always gives conspiracy theorists a hard time, but just damn!

I can't agree. 70 billion dollars of "make work"? Even if they did it for this reason, they could have done it in ways that would actually have a positive effect on their nation. Are there no roads and bridges that need improvements or people that need better housing?

It really is a large part of the reason, and you are also correct that it doesnt make sense. Over simplifying i know, but it is a communist mindset. They want the appearance of success to inspire the love and confidence of their citizens. Im not saying they did a good job of it. Also they believe that they can duplicate free market success by fabricating the results of free market success. Its kinda like painting the spare room and assembling a crib and expecting that to get your wife pregnant.
