Why would anybody buy a 38 special

38s do the job they are simple pistol to operate. When shooting the range or quailfying less recover time with 38 compared to 357 shoot a tighter group with 38 take for example of a snubbie 357 shoot few rounds thru one see how accurate u are with a standard 357 load compared to 38. ( Now on the other hand when having to shoot thru walls car doors maybe long distance shot 357 load is the better choice but most shootings occur at about 15steps or less. ) Remember folks its shot placement that counts. 2 center body mass one fatality drill

A 357 snubby is a lot of flash and drama. You better have some serious range time to be able to handle this well enough for a follow up shot (assuming you didn;t burn the attacker to death in the fireball.

On the 38, I keep coming back to Jim Cirillo's story about unloading two revolvers wother of 38 into a suspect, and the guy walking back to the cops car, asking for a hankerchief, and snorting out a round from a headshot.

Or look at the woman in GA just a few years back sho was chased into her attic by a home invader. She shot him 3 times in the face with a snubby 38, hit him 4 of those times, and the guy still had enough in him to tell her to 'stop shooting me', go all the way back downstairs, get in his car and finally die a mile away.

A 38 with top-of-the-line +P defensive ammo that will actually expand is probably as good as anything else, but it sure isn't the right answer for lots of folks, and if you can't put all 5 rounds on a paper plate at 10 feet a snubbie isn't for you at all.
WHEN U DEALING WITH SOME OF THESE GEEKED UP DOPE HEADS THEY CAN BE HARD TO KILL WITH ANYTHING LESS THAN A RIFLE. BUT HAVE SAW FOLKS SHOT WITH 25S 22S DIE ON THE SPOT saw one shot with 357 mag went thru his chest lodged in his back and lived I GUESS IF ITS YOUR TIME DON,T MATTER WHAT YOUR SHOT WITH IF NOT THEY LIVE ANOTHER DAY( SOME FOLKS LIKE CATS GOT 9 LIVES)

Very nice, but if you use different guns, the comparison means nada.

I did not see mention of bullet weight

With the extreme differences in performance, using the same barrel lengths, I don't see how the gun used would make that much difference. 500 fps is a huge margin, and changing guns isn't going to help the cause of the .38 whe compared to a .357. A snub nose .357 is much more powerful than a 6" barreled .38.
At the beginning he states he was using 125 gr in both calibers.
This guy is the most unbiased tester I have ever seen.
I wish to restate that I really like .38 and carry one often, but I don't pretend that it is something it is not.

Price and size, 38 only revolvers are almost always cheaper, 38 revolvers can be made super light, small etc. but if it’s a bigger heavier gun, might as well get a 357 if you have the money for it

I’m pretty sure the GA guy survived & went to jail. I think he crashed a mile away.

Not the same gun at all, not even the same make of gun, and different length barrels and cylinders.

A revolver is 5 or 6 guns in one frame as each chamber has its own performance. Gun to gun variations can easily give 200+ fps difference due to cyl gap, headspace and chamber dimensions. A true comparison is diff ammo fired from the same chamber in the same gun. The guns used do not even have the chambers numbered, so there is no way to even compare loads in the same gun.

The ammo used was lighter than S&W recommends in their guns.

Entertaining video, but not a valid comparison. Yes the 357 is faster, but it has way more muzzle blast, recoil, and longer recovery time.

In the end it is all angels dancing on the head of a pin as they are both handguns and do hand gun damage. VERY little difference in real performance, except you are less likely to miss as many times with the 38 unless you are an active, competitive shooter. The 357 has essentially 9mm ballistics out of that size gun, and few praise the "stopping power" of the 9.
