Will there be anything beyond 9mm?

9mm will be the big-boy-on-the-block as long as it's the police and US military standard. Plus it offers the average owner a good balance of capacity, bullet options and target penetration.

There will always be other options available, but they might be priced higher due to lower production runs. 380, 357mag, 44mag, 45ACP and 38 SPL will always be around.

You won't see a significant change unless the military/law enforcement make a hard switch and even then they gonna need to stick with it for a decade for it to catch on, which I doubt. Got popular because police and the military picked it up in the first place. I don't think 9mm is the best pistol cartridge out there, but I do think its the best cartridge platform because of cost/availability, capacity, the wide range of pistols from concealable sub compact single stacks to full size 1911's, synergy with PCC's, ease to shoot, and a good variety of ammunition choices that can enhance it's effectiveness as a defense round while making it comparatively cheap to shoot.

The only other thing that might change the tide back towards larger caliber lower capacity handguns would be legislative bans on normal size "aka extended" magazines. If I lived in some ****ty state where I could only legally have a 10 round magazine in a full size handgun instead of a 17-19 round magazine I'd be a lot more inclined towards 10mm, .45, or .357mag.
