Wired security camera or door bell camera? Which one is best. Anyone install these things and can give advice?

This is the product I use regularly, yes Chinese but has recently sold to a taiwanese company. The features are out standing and ease of installation will make this a good fit. One time purchase, no additional hidden fees. Hard drive based unit with expandable storage bay. Dahua also offers a WiFi version of a doorbell as well as a flood light camera that unlike ring, offers you local storage as well as allowing you to integrate them into your NVR

And you have any other questions feel free to hit me up.

And thanks NDIrish1 NDIrish1

Wired with POE, you can use something like blue iris for local storage.

Best to run the cameras on another vlan or block them from communication with the outside world with firewall rules.

Record it to a local NAS. You can expose the ports if you need externally with an SSL cert and log in or use a VPN to get back Inside.

Good luck!!

My old house had wired cameras all around it because wireless sucked. Now, wireless is much improved. There are advantages and disadvantages to local storage versus cloud storage. If I were dead set on wired, I’d probably hire a local security company or just buy the best-rated bundle from Costco.

A few months ago I bought a pair of wireless ring cameras. Because they cleared a hundred acres just around the corner for a new housing project, my yards was the favorite dining spot for all the dislocated armadillos.

I get notified every time there is motion in either the front or back yard. The armadillo invasion is over. But the Ring camera does a pretty decent job of real time cellular notifying when there is activity in the area.

I used to set up a camera out at the end of my driveway pointed towards the house. Aside from armadillo, and deer activity, I would get notified when someone entered or left the property. About a 20 second delay from realtime. When I used to have the free trial storage plan I could playback from before the motion was detected to watch all the action.

I think if you really analyze your needs, you can get by with something like a ring doorbell camera and an additional camera covering the area around the other entrances. Plus these wifi connected devices will give you real time notifications on your cell phone when motion is detected in the area.

If you NEED a hardwired, constantly recording security camera with its own dedicated power supply and storage system, this isn’t for you.

I purchased the 2 cameras for the armadillo invasion. Now that its over, these cameras notify my cell phone anytime someone approaches my house. Oh and the rechargeable batteries last about a month.

We have Arlo, and it is shyt for how much it cost. There's a 15 second delay and you have to pay a monthly fee to store the clips it records, was under the impression it was completely free. And it picks up every single time the wind blows. Had to turn off notifications it was so annoying. Set up was easy and it's good for checking delivered packages for peace of mind until I get home.

I have Arlo at 2 houses and it has become a pain because I am have 2 versions of hardware. Old hardware needs a base and new hardware connects directly to your router. It is sensitive and I get notifications for a tree limb in the detection path of the doorbell. Setting the activity zone doesn't seem to work and you cannot adjust what notifications you receive. My biggest complaint is if you lose power the cameras or base station doesn't always re- connect and can require a physical reset. That isn't possible for the vacation house.

It's hard to beat the Ring ecosystem, but it does mean storing video in 'the cloud'.

If you just want a video doorbell though, there's a ton out there that don't need cloud storage.

Same for camera systems with DVRs, but sorting through those is a mess since 99% of them seem to be from China.

Personally I like the Wyze stuff as well. I have one of their WiFi cameras in my attic in case squirrels get in there. No cloud storage required for that if I remember, or if it does it's free.

I bought an Arlo setup and kept it running for about 3 months before switching back to my Nest cameras. Keeping the batteries charged was a pain in the ass and notifications like said earlier were pains. They would alert on wind blowing a blade of grass … Nest has a $80 buck per year unlimited cameras deal. Activity zones and notifications work decent, and, hard wired for power. Extreme clear pics compared to Arlo too.

Not having to hardwire the cameras was something we were looking for. We got the solar panels so we wouldn't have to recharge them. But, as I understand now, hardwired probably works a lot better.
