woops, i almost sold a fake optic

Yes, especially with phones. Not even discussing iPhones, Android phones are very simple to counterfeit. The software is out there for anyone to use, so all anyone needs to do is copy the case design and find an off-the-shelf chipset that's readily available on the market that matches or near matches the phone being cloned. Plus software can be modified to trick the user into thinking there is more storage than actually exists. This used to be a big deal with USB drives when they were much more expensive. You could take, say a 500MB drive and program it to make a computer think it was 4 or 8 GB. You'd only have issues when trying to use that space. Same with SSD hard drives, which have finally come down in price as they are more popular. With watches, you could even have some real Rolex components but a Chinese or Japanese clone movement. Think about how many people want a Rolex just because it says Rolex? Would they even know what to look for in the movement?

The Chinese are very good at counterfeiting stuff. They're getting better at gun parts as the government opens up the market more and more, allowing more companies to compete for government contracts. And in some cases these products are authentic that failed QC. Company is making them in China, throws them out, someone digs in the dumpster or nearby river and pulls them out, resells them.

I understand the Chinese counterfeits.. I mean taking the inside of a good optic ot and replacing it with a Chinese counterfeit? Is that a big problem like you referenced?? I have never heard of such a thing...

I haven't seen one YET but it wouldn't be hard to do. Lens spanner wrench, other basic tools, the hardest part (for most) would be the nitrogen purge just due to getting the equipment. People have done DIY scope purges so it's possible. I wouldn't see it happening on a mass scale but it would be like someone buying a $1500 AR, replacing all of the special parts with Chinesium MIM airsoft-tier parts, and then selling the $1500 AR as a $1500 AR while selling the valuable parts separately.

But I have seen the camo-painted optic approach before. Went into a pawn shop about two years ago when I was visiting my grandparents in SC and they had an AR with an "authentic" Trijicon ACOG that was "battle tested". It was a clone sight painted with the rest of the gun. I don't think the guy who sold it intentionally did it to get more money, however the pawn shop was purposely selling it as authentic. To the average eye it would have looked fine, but little things like screws and glass quality throw it off. And that was an older clone optic; the new ones are really good, as shown in this thread. Will fool a lot of people.

Those bastards have counterfeited a Ford 150.

You're not the only one ... I had to point out a fake Trijicon RMR to an Alpharetta gun store a few weeks ago .... the clone optics are getting better and better... or the real optics are getting worse? maybe somewhere in the middle?

Depending on the gun I dont mind the cheap stuff sometimes, it's also a good way to see if I like that style of optic.

They have some good options on that site.

The Guys on ODT, will let you know if something does not look or sound right. I don't care if it's a spelling error ! But, I want to the Gun show with a rifle at Jonosboro last year with 3 buddies and my son. A Chinese guy was selling some scopes that I swear were Original. But, my Son was like dad watch it there Chinese so there fakes, my buddy took my rifle out of its carry case and tried to mount the RedDot, it would not mount what ever we tried. Then the Chinese guy tells us will it's from China so some of the parts are a little off! So, you are NOT ALONE!
