Working out

To lose weight, regardless of the magic you've heard in the past, you have to have a caloric deficit. It's that simple.
Calories in/calories out. Go with heavy weights/fewer reps. Keep resting periods short. Drink enough water (gallon, or even less, will do). Remember, it's 80% diet/20% exercise. Good luck.

Start with a BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) calculator to get an idea of calories needed. Your BMR is basically you just living . . . needed calories to sustain life/at rest.

One more tip: stick with compound movements.

I use an app called MyFitnessPal ... you get an online portal, and it syncs with your smartphone. Smooth way to track food intake... not just calories, but nutrition. It features a bar code scanner to zap in your foods, and you can create your own recipes to store in the app as well. Very handy tool.

i just downloaded that today, im going to give it a shot

I suggest you start using this site also. http://www.bodybuilding.com/

When you get into free weights practice the movements with just the bar or a 10 lb dumb bell so you can watch yourself. Drive down to Locust Grove & you can train with me for a day :thumb:

i may take you up on that

I'd stay away from supplements. A decent diet will ensure you have the protein and other nutrients. Most of that stuff is unproven, expensive, and potentially dangerous. Jack3d (pre-workout) was cited in a few deaths in an article I read last week. I've worked out for over 20 years and took up Crossfit 6 months ago. It's expensive, but it makes my old gym routines seem pointless in comparison. Just my 2 cents....

All of this! Stick to whole foods. I've been through all of the supplements, and it just burns a hole in your wallet, seriously.
That is pretty crazy about those two that used Jack3d and died. We probably won't know the whole story, but it's still something to think about.

Another tip: watch your form. I've seen so many idiots that try to impress the tail at the gym by lifting more with bad form.
You could really injure yourself as well. I laugh at those guys.

Jack3d was banned & supplements do work. Crossfit is just dangerous and to many people get hurt from it. You should know if you worked out for 20 years that they teach you bad form

The ones that died while takeing jacked were dehydrated and over exerted. I took it for a while I loved it but I have changed to Novem just because I actually know what is in it

For what it's worth man, it might help to post up your exact goals. There is a lot of good advice in here but if we knew exactly what you were trying to accomplish. I know to get in shape, but just weight wise, or run a triathlon, etc.
For instance the advice about dieting is great but a little more geared towards strictly weight loss. To gain a lot of muscle you would up the protein intake versus a performance goal where you could keep the protein standard and up your carb intake.

Like mine for instance, I have to keep a basic fitness level for the army, but I am also trying to get that elusive 6 pack.
I will wake up, take my pre workout then hit the gym. Followed by a protein shake with whatever the diet calls for that day. No more sugars, I binge on veggies and boil about 10lbs of chicken a week. Fat is taken care of with a special ranch dip concoction.

I follow a 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. With a 15 calories per pound goal. 25%ish is from fats and the rest is from healthy carbs.

ttrying to lose the beer belly and building upper body strength are my basic goals. plus just being healthier in general.
