I have an old Browning A5 16 gauge that's chambered in 2 9/16. Rather than rechamber the gun, Id like to keep her original. The 2 1/2 inch shells are very popular in Europe for upland game birds and they should shoot well in this gun. I have found them on line but thought I would check locally first to see if anyone had any. Thanks !!

I bought an old Baker Standard SXS in 16ga that was chambered for 2 1/2". I reload the 16's but am set up for 2 3/4" so I had the gunsmith extend the forcing cones to accept the 2 3/4" shells. By extending the forcing cones you can shoot either shell and get a softer shooting gun. You might consider it.

One thing I have learned, though, is that your gun will shoot tighter (about one choke) with the modern shells (whether 2 1/2" or 2 3/4") because the modern shells have plastic wad columns that give a tighter seal. The compay in Unadilla makes the 2 1/2" shells with columns that spread more than usual if you want to keep the 2 1/2" chamber.

I've shot 2 3/4" shells in 2 1/2" guns before but thee are two problems. First, since there is less room for the shell to open up before the crimps hit the forcing cone, pressures are increased. You have to watch the pressures in the shells you are using. Second, You may find that the shells won't eject because the crimps are more tightly jammed into the chamber. I really doubt if extending the forcing cone in the gun will affect it's value. No one will even know when you go to sell it unless them measure it. Hey, you might measure the chamber yourself and just see if it's been re-chambered.
