The ammonia in Windex does not dissolve the corrosive salts. It's the water that carries the ammonia in windex that dissolves salts.

Some bottles of Hoppes #9 state that it dissolves corrosive ammunition salts (it's actually the primers that have corrosive salts).

For some reason, telling someone you rinsed out your barrel with windex is preferable to saying you rinsed out your barrel with water.

However, the brits once issued a square topped funnel to rinse enfield barrels with hot water. The funnel kept the water out of the action.

If windex works for you, go for it. But chemistry says that it's the water, not the ammonia that is working.

But maybe the ammonia makes the chrome barrel shine?
