    the older Marlin Firearms Co. made them with american black walnut stocks. The bluing is much better. No cross bolt safety. Remington bought Marlin and began using birch and laminate stocks. Put a safety on them, and cheaped out on the bluing. The old addage, you get what you pay for, applies.
