This.
If you are just looking to get ****faced because life sucks then any cheap moonshine or vodka will do fine. You aren't going to be scrounging for $200 a bottle Macallan 18.
I didn't like the Becker bk2. Way too thick for the length of the blade. The bk 9 was better if a tad too long. I also really liked the bk14 and regret trading it off to my brother. It's not really a bushcraft knife though.
For 500 miles between two specific parties I would think your best bet is going to be an HF ham radio, a cheap to make and throw up dipole antenna, and some maybe directional antennas back at home.
You would have to take 2 different ham license tests(Technician, General) but they are pretty...
Man I remember being a kid and reading "Hatchet" then going out in the woods behind the house and daydreaming about this.
Have not seen the show. I need to check it out, but I'm about tired of reality shows they are all the same after a while.
Never seen one before. I think if I wanted a makeshift hatchet I would just carry a tomahawk. Easy to rehandle if needed, or you could just carry the head in your pack and make a handle when you need one.
All you have to do is pretend to go deer hunting and you will be surrounded by them.
On a serious note, the article makes it out like .22s are great for squirrels and useless for anything else. There are all kind of animals that a .22 is useful for.
If they are police band radios they are programmed to operate on a repeater. Even if they worked, it is illegal to operate on those frequencies.
If you happen to own a business you might could have them reprogrammed to commercial frequencies, but you would have to have a business radio license...

Unless reason for break down was battery related, I would call for help on ham radio. Even still, always have pistol either on me or in truck. Small flashlight on me with extra batteries in truck, and spare flashlight in truck. Almost always have water in the truck.
