Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Is there much Dog hunting in your area. I know that when we had a lot of dog hunters it pushed our rut out, I saw chasing turkey season.

  7. Hog hunting with AR10 need optics suggestion

I like a Trijicon Accupoint 3X9x40 with an amber aiming point. It has excellent light transmission and the illuminated aiming point is quick, never been able to get it to run though.

I do 250 to 350 all the time, but not with a .308. I have upgraded from 30.06 to 257 wthby mag for that stand.

  10. 300BO for deer, dedicated upper needed

Range shooting and shooting at game are different worlds. I shoot reactive targets at extreme range, with good success, enough to know better than try it on game.
  11. 300BO for deer, dedicated upper needed

Deer at 500 yards are not easy. If the deer takes a step at the moment of the shot, you have just gut shot that deer. A lot can go wrong in half a second.
  12. Shooting a deer for meat

Easy Hoss, did not say you did. Yet the OP was asking where to shoot a deer to prevent ruining meat.
  13. Shooting a deer for meat

Would you recommend that shot to a novice who asks where to shoot a deer? I would not. I have 40 plus years of experience, top skills and equipment and I will wait for better odds. But that is just me and it is only a deer. I shoot squirrels in the head or not at all.
  14. Shooting a deer for meat

Congratulations. I do not have pictures of the young buck I shot that was missing his lower jaw, a festering mess in its place. The guy who shot it off probably thought he missed clean.
  15. Shooting a deer for meat

That MOA gun you shot at the range is a different tool in the field, requiring a whole different level of skill.
  16. Shooting a deer for meat

Lungs. The head is almost always moving or about to. I have seen very few who could make such a shot often enough to call it ethical.
  17. What was the best and worst part of your deer season?

Lots of best, we had a great week in camp with friends and family, ate better than kings, saw lots of deer, I killed a good 9 point, my best in years. I am relieved that it is over, time to fish!
  18. 14" 460 XVR with Leupold VX3 2.5-8x32mm, Leupold Mark IV rings.

By Gosh, anything he dern well wants to!
  19. Any coyote hunters out there....

After the Deer Hunting crowds have left, hunting from elevated stands overlooking "Edge" types of cover can be productive, early and late, a call helps. Don't miss.
  20. Crows and Coyotes: what do I need to know?

When your Corn first sprouts, shoot as many crows as you can and hang them over the corn, trees, wires, whatever. This is what I do and the only thing that works and works every time. The Crows will catch on to the electronic call pretty quick. The coyotes are easier as long as they come in...
