The reason they are so loud is because the trucks are being operated without mufflers. A modern truck with the factory exhaust system intact will not make that obnoxious sound. Kinda like an unmuffled hardley abelson motorcycle.:behindsofa:

With that year model Cummins, the injection pump is very sensitive to any restrictions in the fuel delivery system. The lift pump should be able to supply clean fuel from the filter at about 4 to 5 PSI. The injection pump is cooled and lubricated by the diesel fuel, and will burn itself up...
