    Actually it's gold foil. Which is good at absorbing/reflecting a lot of the stuff that would normally harm you, or make instruments useless. NASA was very aware of the radiation that was present outside of earth's atmosphere.

Until we can travel at light speed, or can create wormholes, or some other way to travel across space quickly...

    They did only figure out in the last 50 years or so, that the Egyptians actually did have working sawmills to cut stone. Who knows what other knowledge has been lost over time. Maybe we are the 3rd or 4th time around on the technology train.... or.... it might just be aliens.
