    The pistol appears to be in very good mechanical shape. Think it would be safe to use new .38 S&W ammo in it? The pistol is around 125 years old. Hate to see him hurt himself or damage the pistol.

    Also, the black item in the photo is the holster for it. The pistol belonged to an old lady in his family whose father gave it her in the early 1900s. The family was extremely wealthy and her father had purchased it when he was a young man. Fascinating designed pistol.

    Appreciate the info guys. That's what we thought it was. He was wondering what it's value was. He wants to find ammo for it. He has an older man who has a lot of older ammo types who without seeing it told him it might be a .32 short. He'll go back and see if he has any .38 S&W ammo in stock...

    I hope I'm in the right forum for this question. A relative of mine has an old nickel plated S&W revolver that has no markings on it to show what caliber it is. .38 special ammo fits loose and .32 shorts don't fit tight either. Looking it up online, we think it might be a .38 S&W 2nd model...
