I have several early (1990 and older) commercial Springfields. They are good quality, but not really collectable. I’ve spent less than $500 on each of mine.

It's a round butt N-frame. Round to square conversion grips that cover the backstrap (like the Hogues you're probably looking at) will make the recoil more manageable.
It'll drop more, but there's only so far it can fall. Commodity prices are down, but they won't be dropping to historical lows with all the growth in Asia chewing up raw materials.

You can buy used BDL bottom metal for cheap... $40 is the most I've ever paid, including hardware and mag spring and follower. Same thing on a used BDL stock... just a regular synthetic or wood BDL stock can be had for $50 or less.
If you have a rifle that you like, I don't think it's a bad...
