so, like the title says, I would like to know what you guys thinks about a compensator on a 1911. I'm new to the 1911 world. I personally think they "look" pretty cool, but are there any real benefits to having one? are there any major drawbacks to having one?

I personally do not like them. They don't accomplish much in a .45 acp and make the gun longer so it's harder to draw from holster. I converted a Springfield GI to a .460 Rowland and the conversion had it on there because at that power level it was necessary. My suggestion if you really want to have it compensated is take it to Dobbs and have him drill some holes in slide and barrel. If you do that though be prepared to hold on to it for a while because more than likely the resale/trade value will be diminished.

Pretty much what I was thinking on both points. It won't be a race gun or a monster caliber. Have seen a few with them and was sort of curious about them. Now I know. Thanks for the input, guys. Big help.
