My 3 inch winchester slugs measure 2 and 3/4
My 2 and 3/4 remington slugs mesure 2 and1/4
My 2 and 3/4 buck shot measures 2 and 3/4.
Whats going on. False advertising?

Hi James,

The length measurements of shotshells are the length when fully open.
This corresponds to the length of the chamber inside the barrel.
A 12 ga or 20 ga shotshell which is fold crimped will be about 1/2" shorter than the chamber to allow the fold to open within the barrel chamber.
What are the lengths of the shotshells after you have fired them?

Are any of your shotshells roll crimped?
Shotshells which have a roll crimp will have different hull dimensions than those which are fold crimped.

It is safe to fire shotshells which are shorter than the chamber length, but firing shells which are longer than the chamber can cause higher chamber pressures. We would not want to fire 3 1/2" shotshells in barrels with 2 3/4" or 3" chambers.

Hope this helps,

Never measured, never gave it a thought. However I do read the barrel and ammo box on chamber length. My Dad has a 12ga that says 12ga 2 1/2" chamber. Ain't seen shells that length

LOL, well there you have it. I figured somebody made them. Also the 1 1/2" shells. I'm afraid that ole gun is a wall hanger though. As the story goes. My step Grandfather gave my dad the gun. He was a retired police officer. On a call one night, was getting shot at by a drunk guy. The guy was shooting slugs. One got lodged in the barrel and he fired another. It got lodged creating a bulge on one side. Had it not been for that, he may have been shot. Anyways, he took the gun off of him. It was all rusted up when my Dad got it. it had been under his bed in a gun case for some time. I restored it. Been sitting in his gun cabinet @ 50yrs
