r some help for her. Thanks for any advice.

Get her a J frame Smith and Wesson until you can get her to the range a few times.
They are idiot proof.
The 638 is a good choice.
If, after she gains confidence with the revolver, and you and her think she is ready for a semi auto, go wit her to a range that rents several different semis and let her decide.
De cocker semis are somewhat safer, but heavier.

Small 38s and 9mms kick too much for an anxious user. We all have made our own journey moving from gun to gun to find what suits us (until it changes again).

Ruger LCR 22lr will get her started. I say Ruger because the superior S&W trigger is harder to pull. And double up on ear plugs, plus muffs when shooting handguns.

If the little 22s don't impress her, they make that gun in 22mag, or even .327 which will also fire .32 S&W. Use wadcutters, not round nose. Don't do .32 H&R mags or .327 mags in that gun. Too hot for an anxious shooter.

Revolver as mentioned the LCR is as good as it gets. If recoil is a issue get her a 22 or 22 mag with good ammo
