The effort of anti-rights groups by coining phrases like "gun murders", "assault weapons", etc has led to rapidly anthropomorphizing firearms in an effort to demonize them, and squarely place the blame for violence on the tool versus the user.
Looks like it's made it's way to private colleges as well, and why wouldn't it.
