Wow. He destroyed his own gun, worth about $1400, just to make a point about how assault weapons are bad?
Does he think HIS gun, that exact one that he's owned for 30+ years, was going to be used in some horrible crime?
During his lifetime?
Does he fear the gun would turn HIM into a killer?
Or some member of his family would use it in a massacre?
If he worries about some nutcase stealing it, get a good safe!
Heck, get a safe for the rifle AND put the bolt carrier group in the trunk of his car.
That ought to prevent some burglar from getting it and selling it, as a working gun, on the black market.

And yeah, now he has an SBR, although I'm not sure this guy is smart enough to realize that, and it probably wasn't his intention. He needs to cut that barrel through the chamber itself to destroy it.
A rifle can have the barrel cut down so short that even the chamber "throat" area is cut through, and it will STILL WORK. Probably with no accuracy, and it would require modifications to the gas port system to make it function as a semi auto...
In this video, somebody cut an AR barrel down to 2 inches, and since that includes the length of the chamber itself, the new barrel is so short that you can see the bullet tips sticking out beyond the "muzzle". But it works!
