Anyone familiar with these Baofeng Chinee radios?

I have a kid wanting one for Christmas. They seem to be dirt cheap but are they even worth the $20 or so they cost? This would be for a 13 yr old kid. What exactly can he do with this thing?

They're referred to as CCR's (Cheap Chinese Radios). They work OK with a little programming. Power output claims are somewhat creative.

They're very useful for analog listening in the bands they cover.

For you to get the most mileage out of a radio like this you should have your HAM license.

No age limit if they can pass the test. Not a ham, but I've met a few teens with their ticket.

Yes they are worth the money. We have several with longer antennas.

They look cool on my nightstand, 5 years old , never ever turned them on. Just like all my ham crap in the garage
