Mainly looking at CSX. After 10 years as a Paramedic, I am ready to possibly move on. I was thinking about applying for a conductor position and hopefully move up to engineer one day. My job history mainly consists of driving a semi truck and EMT/Paramedic.

So tell me what I may be getting into. The good and especially the bad. Pay, hours, ect.

I know a couple guys who work for Norfolk Southern, and I met an ODT'er a while back that works for them. Good job, great retirement (90% from what I was told), great benefits. I was also told there is lots of overtime if you want it, and especially during those first couple years you will be travelling quite a bit until you can land one of those local jobs. A friend of mine works 15 minutes from his house and drives one of those trucks up and down the tracks all the time. He has been there for about 5 years. There is quite a bit of red tape and paper shuffling to get in there but probably worth it if that is what you want to do. Railroad is one of those jobs I almost wish I had gotten into a while back.

My brother in law works for NS. He was furloughed indefinitely. They brought him back after like 16 months. I am going to try to steer clear of them for now. That makes me nervous.

I knew some EMTs in Ohio. They were all burned out from it after a few years. Too many OD's, suicides, and other similar sadnesses. My hat goes off to you. I don't think many people have what it takes. Good luck, man.

You will work A LOT! You will work holidays! You will be expected to be at work come snow, volcanic eruptions, tornados, or a zombie apocalypse! They really really work on seniority there, you will have to wait for someone to die or retire and you will have to climb the ladder to get the job and shift you want. GREAT retirement! They really like hiring active and previous military personnel, I have a brother in law that is a supervisor for Norfolk Southern, he hates it but he hates everything and everyone besides being over in the sandbox.
