First off let me preface this story by saying I live in a very nice area, in a nice neighborhood, with lots of nice cars. I've been a vicitim of theft and break ins while living in a luxury condo in midtown and thought moving to the nicest zip code in Atlanta would eliviate this....boy was I wrong.
I live in a town home community with tandem garage set ups (1 car in garage, 1 in drive way). This morning I went out to my car to let my Girlfriend out of the garage for work when I noticed that my car was unlocked. When I got inside my car all my things had been gone through and the arm rests and glove box was open. Fortunately the only thing that was stolen was my change. Only thing I had of value in there were 2 pairs of nice sunglasses, and those remained untouched. Even though it wasnt much, I still called the police. Upon the officers arrival he dusted for prints and initially deducted that it was probably a homeless person looking for unlocked cars to get into and steal cash. I assured him I NEVER leave my car unlocked and asked him if it was possible they might have used an RFID scanner. The officer naturally dismissed it and assured me it was a homeless person. While outside 6 other neighbors that live in a row came out and asked if my car had been broken into. I told them someone got into my car. They all had the same thing happen to them, all proclaiming they had locked their doors.
At this point I know there is no way we all left our doors accidently unlocked. The officer at this point wasnt sure if he still wanted to believe someone with scanners got in the cars...so he dusted each car and found no usable prints and no signs of forced entry.
I assured him this has been happening and I received a warning email about it from my Uncle was is a DA in Ohio and has been hearing about it. They are investigating further but I doubt anything will come of it.
The cars that were broken into were all luxury vehicles as well. Bmws, Lexus, Audi, my Infiniti, and a Yukon Denali.
What astonished me was that when the officer asked my other neighbors why they hadnt reported it initially, they all said "well I dont think anything was stolen." That blew my mind and upset me. Thankfully the officer lectured them on it and save me that speech. I didnt hang around to long enough to hear what each person had reported stolen, but the first two did say they had sunglasses untouched in their car and had gps, ipods, change, and clothes stolen.
Anyways to everyone else. Do not leave valuables out in plain site in your car. And when at malls and other public places use your standard key to lock your car instead of the remote. You never know who is watching...they could be a couple of cars away and obtain your remote code. Once you've walked away they can unlock the car and get what the want undetected. Please be careful, and dont leave your firearms in the glove box.

I hope they catch the scum that did it.
