Just got my renewed permit in the mail. Only took 10 calendar days. I like the speed and love the new license. It looks like a drivers license. The old one looked fake compared to this.

However, the cost was ridiculous. 80 friggin dollars! When and why did the cost double or tripple? I don't recall paying anywhere near this price before.

My first permit cost a grand total of $95 in Hall County. I hope I don't have any trouble with Cobb when my renewal comes up next year.

For those expiring after July, you all don't have to do the fingerprint thing because of the new gun law that passed a few weeks ago.

I had to go to the county jail for fingerprinting again for the renewal. Which makes no sense since they had my prints from when I applied for the license the first time.

Unfortunately, there are several probate judges from different counties that have stated that they plan to continue requiring fingerprints at renewals. I don't know if this will stand or not, or if the citizens will be required to pick up the tab on prints like wr have been.

Pretty sure they will fail. GeorgiaCarry.org will file suit and the probate judges will lose. State law prevails. Rogue judges lose. Long live GCO!

I spoke to a judge and there is an issue it appears with background checks and exemption from doing a background during a firearm purchase. She informed me if they don't re-fingerprint then we would be required to be background checked again and pay the $5 fee for each purchase. Supposedly it's an issue at the state/federal level above and beyond my pay grade. I think GCO is involved as they were mentioned during our brief discussion. There is an issue with the older fingerprints it appears.

Which lead me ask; what other "rights" do we have to be fingerprinted and pay a fee for? But it's just like getting a driver's license? Ah but is that a "right"? Um well no it isn't. Then this leads to perhaps we need (gasp) constitutional carry, interesting discussion.......

But yes why does the permit expire and require the fingerprints every 5 years? Or why do we require a permit for any right that has been "unconstitutional" for other rights where attempts to restrict them occurred through poll taxes and Jim Crow type of laws?

Edit:

http://smartgunlaws.org/background-checks-in-georgia/

5.Federal law exempts persons who have been issued state permits to purchase or possess firearms from background checks if those permits were issued: 1) within the previous five years in the state in which the transfer is to take place; and 2) after an authorized government official has conducted a background investigation, including a search of the NICS database, to verify that possession of a firearm would not be unlawful. 18 U.S.C. § 922(t)(3), 27 C.F.R. § 478.102(d). [↩]

To initiate the 5 year background check it seems there is a requirement currently to have new fingerprints either at the federal or state level.
