Not sure where to put this ..

Wires out of ceiling are:

- Bare is copper ground
- Earth tone
- Black
- Red

On fan:

- Black
- White
- Ground on fan base atteched to ceiling

What does the ceiling wires attach to?

You'll need to go look at the switch side to confirm what was done. Are there separate switches for the fan and light? Is the switch for the light part of a 2 way?

You sure your "earth toned" wire wasn't originally white?

This is from Google:

Ok. The earth tone was white and is the neutral, the red and black are separate switches that once controlled the fan and the light kit separately. Cap off the black wire in the ceiling box, connect black from fan to red in box, white from fan to white in box and ground to ground. You’ll now have a switch that does nothing and there’s not much short of dry wall repair and a new wall box that will fix that. You’ll get used to it.

I installed a ceiling fan today and my wiring was different from this, so probably no help. I had a red cable coming from the ceiling that didn't go to anything and I just capped it off and shoved it out of the way. Mine went ground to green, white to white, and black to twisted black and blue. Home Depot has video instructions for any fan they sell. Good luck.
