Looking to start building points to go Elk Hunting on Public land. Anyone have a preferred area/unit in Montana, Wyoming or Colorado that doesn't take 10+ preference points to get drawn? I'm not looking for your exact spot, just an area you may be familiar with.

Thanks for any help and info!

I highly recommend you research Idaho over the counter elk tags instead , cheaper and just as much opportunity with out the 2-4 year wait to build your points. It's around $657 for the otc tag, $154 for the license and I always buy a general otc deer tag. The general otc deer tag allows one of 5 species to be taken on that tag, black bear, mountain lion, mule deer, Whitetail or a Wolfe for $301. Lots of public land and most of it is over night back country camping friendly.

Wyoming has wilderness guide requirements for non resident and Montana gets you land locked quickly between private and public land.

Colorado has an abundant herd, approx 250k plus animals and otc second choice tag options but planning and playing the season can get stressful.

I'm from CO and can attest is the best for elk hunting. HOWEVER:
It's a lot of work. You will hike 8-10 miles a day in rugged terrain. No, not like walking up Stone Mountain, its more like the scenary from Lord of the Rings. Seriously, be in shape. Don't start walking around your block a month before, do REAL exercises and work outs.
For those of you wondering about the preference points deal, the 10+ preference points areas are selected areas that are set aside for quality hunts (you skip a year of hunting for 1 point). Only a few areas are like that. Once you hit X number of points, you apply for the areas which normally have 350-400 class bulls. Oddly enough, my dad and uncle are doing a PP area this upcoming year and I'm hoping to tag along.
It's seriously addicting, watch out!

Thanks. I haven't dug into Idaho yet. I have a friend that lives in Wyoming and he told me which unit to put in for but it requires 10 preference points to get drawn. Granted the Bulls are huge, I don't want to wait 6 years of buying points plus the point you get when purchasing the license to enter the random draw to hunt. Piglatinhater, I was researching units 43 and 55 in CO. Any familiarity with either of those?

Thanks for the info so far gentlemen!

In as well.
I’ve always really wanted to do this.
I’ve got tons of backcountry experience. The physical part won’t be hard. It’s more the paperwork that burdens me.

Possibly would even hook up and do this with somebody else if interested.

I don’t know how much it cost to buy a point each year, but it sounds like you / I should Start buying Colorado points every year, and hunting Idaho now.
