I have a very old Smith and Wesson that is still in excellent condition. I am trying to find someone with an old serial number reference book. The serial numbers for their old weapons were stamped on the frame before the gun was assembled so in series doesn't help alot. It has been in my family for 90 years now and would like to find more history on it with spending $50 through s&w.

jmsimmons, I will try and help with the shipping date. But, on the old Smiths, like yours, Smith did not ship them in numeric order. Shoot me a PM with the serial number, caliber, length of barrel, and I will try and help. I may not be able to tell you anything, but I will try.

If you want to pay $50, you can get a 'Jinks Letter' (named after the archivist at S&W) that will give you as much of the guns history as they can find. This will always include the manufacture date, and usually where it was shipped to.

I know there is a free one on the web somewhere by just signing up for something...but this is cheap. Looks like JWC will probably be able to provide the most knowledge you'll be able to gain without going to Smith though. Awesome that you have a smith that has been in the family for so long, keep passing it down!
