Florida doctor removes wrong organ from patient, resulting in ‘immediate, catastrophic death’
William Bryan was visiting the Florida panhandle when he suddenly began experiencing abdominal pain and underwent emergency surgery.
Surgeon was supposedly removing a man's spleen via a laparoscopic approach . But he removed the guys LIVER, and clamped all the blood vessels to and from that very important organ. Anatomically, that would include the hepatic portal system, which is responsible for a lot of blood from from the lower body and to the heart. FYI: the spleen is on the left of the body, and the liver is on the right.
And, apparently, this same surgeon had taken out another patient pancreas when he should have been working on the adrenal glands. Hint: they are not close to each other. In this tragedy, the hospital "settled" and the doc was never reported to the medical board or his own insurance????
Beyond the obvious medial malpractice, there are others who SHOULD have said something. Including the anesthesia provider, and anyone working as a first assist, and even many of the surgical techs. Taking out a liver, especially laparoscopically, is NOT a short procedure.
The hospital bears a lot of culpability in this one. That doc should face criminal charges like the "neurosurgeon " Dr. Death.
