yes they are illegal (wrongly) and yes they are everywhere. I have shot a real glock 18 and I know what I'm doing. It's controllable and easy to get a lot of hits on target quickly. If you are not well trained, it's a great way to spray a whole mag randomly fast as hell.

Judging by the "shooting"to "shooting death" news reports this isnt the case anymore

The way I understood it they came in from China as 'airsoft' parts available in Wish, Tamu, etc. Lots were imported before Customs/ATF got wise to them. Probably still available if you know where to look.
