Most folks use acid/xrf tests. After a little practice, the fakes ones stand out like a sore thumb.

Exactly what Mike said, once you get a feel you can tell. I use a kee electronic tester and an acid kit if im unsure.

You can always use a rare earth magnet (the stronger the better) but be aware some of the clasp have a spring in them that will stick to the magnet.
