The Issue

I've always had a passion for baking, and for the longest time, I've wanted to turn this passion into a means of supporting my family and sharing my creations with the community here in Thomaston, GA. That's why I invested in setting up a proper, licensed cottage bakery. I've acquired all the necessary licenses required to operate a home-based business legally in Georgia.

However, I'm facing a hurdle now. I want to use the shed I built on my property as the basis for running my cottage bakery business, but current zoning regulations do not permit this. I've poured my heart and soul into creating a space where I can bake my goods, but without a special consideration to allow the use of my agricultural stand for this purpose, my dream remains just out of reach.

This isn't just about baking; it's about contributing to the local economy, offering homemade goods, and bringing people together. With every ingredient meticulously sourced and every batch crafted with love, this business represents an opportunity for community connection and personal fulfillment.

Granting this special permission will not only benefit my family, but also Thomaston's rich community spirit. We already have all the necessary inspections passed to ensure our stand meets health and safety standards. Bringing these baked goods from my shed directly to my neighbors. This is an opportunity our town deserves.

The sole purpose of this petition is to hope with community outreach to amend current code ordinances regarding home occupation businesses currently restrict the use of all accessory buildings, outside storage, that can not be used in connection with home occupation-based businesses We, as the community, plead to the honorable members of thomaston city council /upson county board of commissioners and the city/county planning department to swiftly amend ordanice sec. 504(C)(16) that currently restricts all home-based businesses from using accessory buildings out outbuildings, storage sheds in connection with occupational home bussiness. We, the people and residents of Upson County, Thomaston, ga, ask that this amendment be made in favor of home occupational bussiness to explicitly include the use of accessory buildings, storage buildings in connection with home occupational bussiness while still adhering to all other building codes, permits, and regulated square footage use of home occupational use which are all ready ordanices in use. Please hear and have consideration for our community's request for use of our own property and land to greater build our local community economies. We, the people of Upson County, Thomaston, ga, request immediate attention to this matter.

Sincerely, the residents and property owners of Upson County, Thomaston,ga.

Please consider signing this petition to help us get a step closer to making this dream a reality. Your support can lead to local growth and a stronger community bond. Thank you for supporting my small local business and the spirit of entrepreneurship in Thomaston. Let's bring a little taste of homemade magic to our streets!

What’s the “stupid things”?

Running a business without a license?
Operating Commercial enterprise in a subdivision/neighborhood?
Food/health inspections?
Not paying taxes on income created?

Need more info to generate serious outrage.!!

Those reasons are valid for big corporation type enterprises but for a good old town Baker just selling a few pies out of the back of her house I don't think rivals the moonshine rebellion and Bonnie and Clyde's rampage. It's just ridiculous!!! No doubt they will go after her just as viciously. If they don't get there 25¢ per pie then will not stop at nothing. Someone she had a bad experience with called in on her and we're at once one of her best customers. So when they can no longer buy the pies what do they do they ruin it for her. The sad thing about that is she probably needs that income to help offset prescription cost no doubt. This whole game is rigged against every single American citizen in our nation.

Tell Brandee that if the "building" is one of those portable sheds, that's not permanently affixed to the ground, then it's PERSONAL property, not subject to zoning requirements related to "real property" and she can do whatever the heck she wants with it. If she hard wired it for electrical power, she'll need to rethink that, along the lines of a plug in power outlet similar to a camper...

Not saying that argument will win...., but it should in a free country. Good luck.
