I am new to swords. Looking at Katana types for cutting. School me on the different types or brands, best for the $ and quality/value. Thank you.

The Blade show will be here in about 2 months, save all your nickels, dimes and quarters, go there and ask questions. Then make a decision. I personally like Cold Steel stuff, but there will be ton's of cool swords at the Blade show.

I dont do a lot of sword shopping. But i know enough to tell you to DO YOUR RESEARCH. They may look like big knives but the skill and time required to make a good one all but prohibits them from being economical. That being said companies like cold steel where you get a lot of bang for your buck may be the way to go. Like I said previously Im not a sword shopper but im willing to wager that decent katanas probably start at $500. not saying there arent any good ones cheaper but be very wary because there are tons of crappy ones. The last thing you want is to pay $200 and have a piece of pakistani steel not worth 20 bucks. They can look convincing to the new buyer so buy from somebody reputable. Even the good replicas may have all the details worked out but you could never cut anything with them.
I would look at the one Nicaburns suggested it sounds like he might be in the know.
