Try to keep this short. Was having intense pain in my feet at various times. To the point I couldn't bear to even put a shoe on much less walk. Usually lasted 1 or 2 days. Last attack lasted almost 3 weeks. Managed to get by in a walking boot. Tested for gout but that's a negative. X-rays show that I have no cartilage in the first joint of either of my big toes so from time to time a nerve will just flare up and then agony. Doctor says if there was such a thing as toe replacement surgery I'd be a candidate. 😂 Anyway orthopedic surgeon says cortisone shots in a toe is a no go. The surgery is fusion of the toe joint. Won't affect walking as I am now wearing an orthopedic insole that isolates the toe and keeps it from moving. Anyway question is has anyone had this surgery and what was your experience? Thanks for your patience reading this and your time in answering

if you remember, I had similar experience last year caused me to have to leave the job because I couldn’t walk. Had the injections in my left bottom foot all I did was make it worse, but I think that was because they hit a tendon or a nerve boot and exercise has helped, but it was one of the most painful things I had ever experienced left foot pain was in the arch and the bottom of my foot right foot pain was in the top of my foot terrible! Hope you get better. Call me if you need to.

Thanks my friend. Gives me a little faith in the surgeon as he said injections were not an option in the toe joint. Just would be unnecessary pain that wouldn't fix it. Strangely if you told me today that I needed foot surgery I'd say you were nuts...but Oh Lordy when it flares up I'd let someone cut the toe off!

I saw three different doctors three different opinions says the tendon is crystallizing and they need to go in and cut that tendon. I said hell no

Myself and my oldest brother have the same thing with the big toe. The joint is gone and the pain is intense at times. He did the fusion and is good now. You must not be a young fellow because mine hit me in my late 40s. I’m on my feet a lot walking job sites. I just deal with the pain and consider walking like I’m walking on two bloody nubs.

My SIL is a fireman and just had his RH big toe joint fused. He is 40 and Joint deterioration/arthritis was so severe this was his only option.
Dr claims once healed this will have no effect on his job duties..walking..running..etc.
Recovery time is a little long. He gets out of his boot tomorrow. Iirc...after the surgery he had a couple weeks of sure enuff downtime to let it heal. He then was required to wear boot and he was limited to how many steps he could take per day.
He got around by using one of those knee scooters.
Its still too early to tell how this will work out for him, but looks promising.
He is not a big guy, and is in excellent physical shape.
I am sure this factored in to the surgeons decision.
You would need 6 to 8 weeks of recovery time.
