Item Description: I am helping my neighbor in selling this shotgun, and I don't know much about it.....if I'm way off key here or you have information some information on this, please share.
An Old Browning Auto 5 12ga shotgun. I tried looking for a date and based on the serial number "B43123" which is on the side of the receiver instead of the bottom, it indicates "B" for 12ga and was mfg 1940-1947 by Remington, licensed by Browning during the Germany occupation. Below are notes from another ODT member.
Shotgun in good shape for it's age....one negative is the forearm wood has a chip on the side where it struck something during one of it's adventures. Has an adjustable choke "The Polychoke Co." Hartford, Conn. Full, Imp, Mod....popular aftermarket addition. Actually it doesn't look like it was shot allot so guessing was used more as a hunting shotgun up in WI. (Where my neighbor is originally from). Please message me with any questions. Thank you.
NOTES FROM ANOTHER ODT MEMBER:
These are known as "American Brownings" and were made by Remington in the US in the 1940s.
Belgium was occupied by Germany during this time.
The serial number location and sequence will be different than the Belgium or Japanese made A5.
The WWII production (1940-47 only) resulted in some 63,000 A-5's in 12, 16 & 20 gauges.
SN Prefix letters & production totals:
12ga = "B" (38,000+)
16ga = "A" (14,000+)
20ga = "C" (11,000+)
The Poly choke was a popular aftermarket addition.
