The frame is a "round butt" frame. The other type is a square butt frame.

Some folks prefer the square butt, especially for the 6" plus models. The good news is that by changing the stocks, if a shooter prefers a square butt, he can get it. The 586-3 was made between 1988 and 1993. I don't think those stocks are original. I could probably nail down the shipping date a little better with the first three letters of the serial number. In the picture, it appears to start with an "A," but that can't be right unless the second letter is a "Y."
