Those were called beer coolers in the 70s. See the foam grommet on the bottom toward the back? You installed the cooler, drilled a hole through the grommet (has a dimple on the inside) and ice melt would drain out of the vehicle, drinks stayed cold.

They quit putting the grommet/seal on the consoles mid 80s, or so.
