Finally got around to shooting my Bulgarian Makarov today that I picked up a few months ago. I was looking over the ammo before I left, since it came it 500 rounds of Silver Bear and about 25 assorted brass cased ammo. I realized the random JHP that came with it didn't feel like the others; upon closer inspection, I saw "9mm Luger" on the bottom. Then I saw that the case bulged around where the bullet sat in it. Needless to say, that was not even taken to the range.

As for the actual shooting, it was an outstanding gun. It's more accurate than I am, but I do wish the front sight was easier to see. I went shooting with Laxguy59 and it was a blast. When I let him shoot it, on his second mag a strange thing happened. I heard what sounded like a very long burp, only to have him turn his head to look at me and say "geriatric fooooooolllll? I think there's a problem... your gun just went burst mode." Thinking he was joking, I had him load the two mags and shoot. Sure enough, on the second magazine he somehow managed to, with a seemingly normal grip, (what I hope was) bump fire a 3 round burst then bump fire the remaining ammo in the magazine.

Has any one ever heard of this happening? Also, for those more familiar with Makarovs, has anyone heard of the slide not staying open when the magazine is out? If I hold the slide stop up with my thumb, it'll stay locked back. However, if I release any pressure at all from it the slide immediately closes. Thanks in advance to anyone who knows about this issue.

Pictures of the gun itself below.

I've had mine fire two or three shot burst if my grip is just so.

The slide hold open should work, check to make sure the spring is still good on it and it is't free floating, after that check the angle of engagement with the slide and make sure it hasn't gotten messed up, and after that bring it to a gunsmith(unless it doesn't bother you).

I love my polish one and it is very accurate. I painted my sights contrasting colors(white back and red front) and that helped with being able to pick them up.

Thanks for the reply. It feels good to know the burst fire wasn't a problem with the gun.

I'm going to be honest, I don't know what you mean by the spring free floating. There is a spring on the slide hold open, but it pulls down towards the trigger. I also am not sure what the engagement angle should be. I don't know much about makarovs; I bought this one on a whim.

I'll definitely be painting the sights to better pick up the front post. Again, thanks for your response.

If the spring pulls down on the slide stop then that is what it should do, I probably could have said that better.

As far as the angle is concerned if there is excessive wear it would be easily noticed and the slide will just push it down instead of being held open.

I have owned an E. German and Bulgarian Makarov and never had this happen. I did change out the recoil spring for a heavier one to reduce the snap and changed to a thicker rubber grip.
I used to simply dismiss these pistols as a weird .380 and then got to talking with some older Russian vets and an Israeli who told me some stories about the effectiveness of this little round.
They have impressive accuracy right out of the box.
Painted my front sight and have been wondering if anyone knows of night sights or a fiber optic front sight for these pistols?
Keep us posted about your findings on why this one ripped off full auto. As fun as that can be, when unexpected it could cause an accident.

I had my polish Makarov bump fire if I held my hand just the right way the recoil would pull the trigger a second time...never had it go more then twice, and can't seem to get it to do it again. either way if he does some testing with it to confirm that it was just how his friend was holding it(or pulling the trigger really fast) then I think it would be safe.

Nothing on the inside looks really worn down. From searching online, I've seen the slide lock issue elsewhere. For some, new recoil springs fixed it; for others, they just live with it. I imagine I will fall into the second camp.

It will probably be awhile before I get a chance to take it out and shoot it again. I'll either update the thread or start a new one when I do, depending on how long it has been. I'll bring Lax again. Hopefully the burst will get figured out and Laxguy won't almost shoot the ceiling again.

I do love shooting it though, may have to make it sooner rather than later.
