MY wife came home an hour ago I was sound asleep and mentally drained. She told me there was a screaming noise outside and something was banging against the front door. Dazed I grabbed my newly traded addition a Kimber 1911. A pistol
type of firearm I have never owned. This 45 replaced the 357 revolver I usually keep next to the bed.

Being RELITIVELY unfamiliar with it, and never have taken it to the range I thought it would be smarter to leave the chamber empty. as the banging at the front door slowly increased I approached, racked the slide, and took the typical position that I have rehearsed with my 357; barrel down, as I peaked through the glass door.

I am left-handed, and very left-handed at that, I had practiced operating the safety with my trigger finger on the right side only safety which I had engaged while approaching the door .

Adrenaline flowing, and looking out side I saw the only threat was to the rabbit my cat had in his mouth and without even thinking did what I would typically do with the 357 which was lower the hammer . My palm moved off the grip safety which made me do a quick reposition losing the control of my thumb on The hammer discharging the weapon into the very bottom of my door.

The slip also ripped my finger open and was slightly painful ....

My wife standing behind me with her hands on my shoulder fearing the potential intruder AND along with my unfamiliarity with something that was in place to protect my family suddenly became a problem ...

I'm not sharing this with you to get a lesson in proper fireARM handling. I am merely pointing this out to share what could be someone else's life down the road ...
The 1911 is going back into my safe until I have proper range and training . Another revolver that I have done these dry runs with is being placed on the nightstand .

After well over 30 years of shooting this is embarrassing to share, but hopefully help someone

Yes my brothers and friends my pride was hurt more than the door. And as embarrassing as this is to share with you hopefully you will not follow in my stupidity.

Just because you have a beautiful new pistol without the proper practice, familiarity situational awareness goes beyond a perceived threat ...

On a positive note, the recoil was very low and hollow point bullets do what they're supposed to .

The beginning...

It's pretty typical for my little buddy Frank Sinatra to attack anything in the yard. I've seen him go after dear, copperheads, And the occasional stray dog
Damn. I can barely get my dog to take her heartworm medicine and BLIP BLIP is over here fielding an attack cat. Crazy world...
