Phenylephrine HCl storage

Isn't this the decongestant that has been taken off the market because it doesn't really work?
Stock up on sudoephadrine instead. It's behind the counter and has a shelf life of around 3 years. You will have to sign for it since it is used in the production of meth.

Ask your pharmacist for something better:

"More than a year after its advisory panel unanimously declared the drug phenylephrine to be useless against nasal congestion, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is proposing that it be removed from common over-the-counter decongestants." Nov 7, 2024

No, it's the stuff that works OK for sinus headaches, just not as well as the one you can't get much of because they think rationing an ingredient will stop meth heads. The same people who told you to wear masks, which could never work, and stand six feet apart, which they just made up, now want to further profit from you by forcing you to see a doctor.

I did some reading. Shelf life testing isn't open ended. They pick a span and test for that. No one actually knows what the shelf life is. Read expiration dates as lasts longer than, but who knows how much longer. Looking at the chemical structure, this stuff should last indefinitely if stored in sealed packaging.

Apologies for not just deleting the thread, but I don't see that option.

Pseudoephedrine works and has been the nasal decongestant of choice for decades. It is no longer available over the counter, but the pharmacist can sell it to you without a prescription.

Phenylephrine replaced Pseudoephedrine in many sinus formulas so that it could be sold over the counter. It has been shown to be only slightly better than a placebo in many independent tests.

As to the shelf life of Pseudoephedrine, I may possibly allegedly have some in a theoretical medicine cabinet that is at least 20 years old and is still effective...or so I have been told

That's some mighty bold nonsense you have there.

Lots of actual science and independent testing to support the evidence. The real issue is how long it took for the FDA to issue guidance when millions of customers told their doctors and pharmacists the new formula was not effective.

No idea on how long you can store it, but it will degrade slowest if you keep it at a low temperature, in the dark (particularly out of UV light) and in low (very low) humidity.

Medications like this tend to reduce in efficacy when they degrade over time, so for something like this, you might have to recalibrate dosages if your stockpile is old.
