I"m considering adding a simple/basic bolt gun that would be suppressed 100% of the time. Not looking to break the bank, just something that would be cheap to shoot, decently accurate to 50-100 yards, QUIET, and fun. Emphasis on quiet. Really only concerned about subsonic performance. I know the 338ARC with more case volume would have the edge with supers but doubt I would ever shoot supers through this.
Primarily I had been looking at the Ruger American Gen 2 Ranch rifle in 300 blackout and was kind of set on this option. I shoot 300 blackout in an AR rifle as well and have dies and molds to make 230gr HP cast and powder coated bullets that would be cheap and fun to shoot. BUT of course I was perusing Rugers website tonight and noticed they are coming out with the American Gen 2 Patrol rifle in 338 ARC.
The Patrol rifle will have a bull barrel on it (vs. the fluted medium contour Ranch rifle). Same 16.1" barrel, AR mags, price, trigger, pic rail, etc.
I bought a 338 can a while ago with the intention of some day getting a 338LM, 338ARC or 8.6BO bolt gun so I am set on either cartridge as far as suppressor goes. I would buy brass from Starline and reload so the costs after I get brass and maybe a mold would be similar to shoot but a little bit more up front (brass, dies, mold). I know supers in the 338 would be a step up from supers in the 300bo and I haven't seen the twist rate of the Ruger. I assume it's more like 1:7 or 1:8 even though I would be shooting subs, I really don't want to deal with the fast twist of the 8.6BO barrels. I am pretty sure the SAAMI spec for twist on the 338ARC is 1:8. Can would probably be Dead Air NoMax 33 regardless of which caliber I buy.
Eventually would like to SBR it and cut to 10-12" for either caliber. Not sure if the spiral flutes would cause an issue when I went to get it chopped and threaded?
So anyone here shot the 338ARC subsonic and could compare the sound signature to 300 blackout subs, ideally out of a bolt gun or closed action rifle? 90% sure I will go 300blackout Ranch rifle, but just saw the 338ARC Patrol and got to thinking...
