..what's never discussed. Every apocalypse movie, TV show etc etc ignores it. Nuclear Power Plants. there are currently 104 licensed/active Nukes online now, the majority of them being East of the Mississippi .. 4 in GA alone. In fact GA is pretty much surrounded by Nukes if you look at the map. So yeah, you get home to your "SHTF stash" , but chances are, we'll all be glowing within 90 days...

No you won't. They all fail to safe. If the electrical grid collapses, if the computers crash, if aliuns invade; the control rods will drop, and the fission pile will just sit there for the next few thousand years slowly turning itself into various cobalt isotopes. Even the associated radioactives contaminated storage yards associated with most reactors will be fine for decades or centuries. Even if a reactor did run-away and melt down or blow like Chernobly or Fukisishima, the contamination was much less than the hysteria.

The nuck'ler weapons stockpiles require sophisticated control and arming systems to make them live and dangerous. Without anyone trained in arming and maintaining them, they are pretty much useless.

I worked at Seabrook Station in NH, I don't trust the failsafes.

They don't go boom. Can't. The most they can do is ooze toxic crud. In a SHTF scenario it will be under the background screams of the rest of our civilization going into the has been of history.

A nuclear plant in Kalifornia is already there. Broke down and shuttered because the idiots there can't/won't fix it. While they have brown outs because they can't meet power demands from the ENTIRE West coast power grid.
