Basically Im looking for something higher powered than my 5.56 AR.
I have seen a few sporterized mosins that looked absolutely beautiful so I started thinking about going that route, especially given how cheap you can pick one up for.
That being said, I dont know much about bolt action rifles so Im not sure if there is something similar to what I want that will be easier or cheaper to buy/build.

Basically I want something that looks similar to these rifles. And I know half of you guys will say that looks arent important but I want it as both a range toy and nice looking piece.

Also, I dont really know how much custom work goes into a mosin such as these. The Boyds stocks are pretty reasonably priced, but I can see different or modified barrel and bolts + the scopes.

Honestly for what those guy have into those rifles you could go buy a scoped savage package that out of the box will be more accurate then you will ever be and you get to pick what caliber you want it in. Plus if you really want one of those stock they are made for just about everyrifle out there. I would just go new if it will be your only bolt gun or get a mosin and leave it alone maybe put a good scope on it but that just my .2¢

I bought my son a Mosin as his first rifle when they were still under $90 and ammo was everywhere. It is what it is..heavy, loud, kind of accurate, but there is a reason they quit making these over 60 years ago.

Personally, I'd choose a rifle and caliber more modern and accurate .

^this.

Get a savage, you can swap barrels easier and still get the boyds stock. You'll also have a lot less trouble mounting scopes

I agree. Get a modern rifle. The Mosin was attractive only because they used to be very cheap to buy. Not so much anymore. Get a modern rifle and you will be much happier. Even if you get one that does not have the kind of stock you like, they are easily and cheaply replaced. Also, if you get a common caliber (30-06, 308, 270..etc) you will find a much larger choice of available ammo.

Okay, so you want something higher powered than the AR. Do you intend to hunt with it? Or just a plinking gun?

Another consideration is how much you plan to shoot.

If you plan to shoot a lot, the Mosin is a good choice because the ammo is still "relatively" cheap. Surplus ammo is corrosive so you need to clean after every range trip.

You can get a .308, .270, 30-06 but the cheapest you'll find is probably around 50 cents/round for the target loads. These will probably be more accurate than the Mosin but unless you're planning to get into long-range shooting, the Mosin will probably fit you just fine.

The Mosin is an economical way to get into high-power shooting. If you get it and don't like it, you can probably sell it for close to what you have in it and try something different.

Good luck with your choice!

Get the Mosin and "sporterize" the F outta it. They are many to chose from and contrary to what others say, still VERY CHEAP. Ammo is abundant and very cheap as well. As far as the whole "accuracy" debate, 7.62X54R is more accurate than 97% of the ppl. that come up in here talkin ****. You live in GA, so if you are goin huntin with it...you aint gonna be shootin at deer out to 10000000 yards. My 2 cents anyway.
