And another veteran gone far too soon.
This is the story of Darren Greenfield, a British Army veteran who served his country for 12 years, including during the Bosnian conflict. After leaving the forces, life became incredibly hard for him. He struggled to find stability and ended up homeless, often seen outside Edinburgh’s Waverley Station.
Darren tried to get help and even stayed for a while in accommodation for ex-servicemen, but it didn’t work out. Like too many others, he fell through the cracks. Despite efforts from his sister and local charities, he never managed to rebuild his life.
Just before Christmas, at only 47 years old, Darren passed in hospital. Friends and passersby marked his usual spot with a simple sign that read, “gone to the angels.”
His story is heartbreaking, but it’s not unique. There are still veterans sleeping rough tonight, people who once served with pride and now struggle to survive.
If Darren’s story moves you, please take a moment to think about those who served and now need our help. Support veteran charities, speak up for better services, and never walk past someone in need.
Rest in peace, Darren. You deserved better.
